Eltonian Technology

Chat Roulette – it’s five ****-filled chambers and one chamber for reporters who think they’ll be breaking the latest tech trend.

Continuing Vancouverage

More goodness from The Report in case you missed it last night. Whoever is doing the writing for his interview segments (for both Ujjal Dosanjh and Shaun White), they deserve serious kudos. It wonder if his guests receive any forewarning of the questions before they appear on the show. It just seems that someone would have stormed off or gotten much more hostile with him – especially with questions of caste like he asked Dosanjh. EDIT: Clearly, Dosanjh understands.

I hope by not including the date, I can avoid litigation by NBC or Stephen’s brother, Ed.

Getting My Fix

… of the Olympics and Stephen Colbert. From catching various events over lunch or late at night, I have become hooked on watching the Winter Olympics. Put them together and what a treat!

The footage of all the crashes reminds me of some of our annual ski trips. We’ve had some epic wipeouts on the slopes – even some on the ice – over the years similar to those in the linked video, so I can sympathize with all the athletes.

Personally, I’ve also really enjoyed Colbert’s lampooning of the improv world on his show as well as his attempts to get Bob Costas to join in the fun.

If It’s Not On The Page

… it’s not on the stage. It might seem like that would be an affront to my improvisational sensibilities, but it’s not as good improv is based on the same conceptual foundation. Don’t worry, this isn’t another epic post about improv.

I recently finished watching one of my Christmas gifts – Scrubs season 8. Yeah, yeah, I’m on DVD time, remember? Perhaps it’s due to the “finality” nature of the series, but this season just seemed to hit moreso than the previous couple seasons – thank you writer’s strike for totally screwing up season 7. I realize that the series didn’t end as I was actually able to catch a new episode of Scrubs: Med School over the holidays. I was a bit thrown as I hadn’t seen anything from season 8 at the time and there were so many changes that I decided to head to Hulu to see what I missed. I wish I could say that I was glad that I did. Season 8 resonated so much with me (more on that shortly) that watching season 9 makes me feel like I’m drunkenly cheating on my girlfriend with some random bar skank. What a mistake!

Sadly, Scrubs seems to be following in the footsteps of so many sitcoms as the seasons near double digits, the characters become caricatures of themselves or watered down parodies. With Scrubs, the main characters are following that trend while the new ones are mostly carbon copies of older characters. Memo to Scrubs season 9 writers: let the characters grow and evolve naturally please! One of the biggest reasons -at least for me – to love Scrubs overall is the writing and the improvisation (thank you Neil Flynn). Seasons 1 – 8 have usually managed to seamlessly blend drama and comedy and give you the sense that these are real people. The writing accentuates the frailty, insecurities, courage, determination, etc. of the human condition through the camera lens of the medical world. The improvisation hammers home the humor, sadness, and the personal peculiarities each actor brings to the characters. The show can make you laugh and cry at the same time. I think if my dad could get over the quick, jump cuts of the daydream sequences he would really enjoy this show.

One of the other things I truly admire about the show is their use of music. Very few shows will allow the cast & crew to contribute their musical taste to the show’s palate. I have enjoyed discovering many new and rediscovering some already familiar artists through this show – hello Colin Hay I’m looking at you among others. Some of my favorites from season 8 include (but aren’t limited to):

Young Love’s Close Your Eyes

Death Cab For Cutie’s I Will Follow You Into The Dark

Ted and Gooch’s Screw You

Peter Gabriel’s (cover of The Magnetic Fields) The Book of Love

Let’s hear thoughts from the other Scrubs fans out there. Have any thoughts on the new season, the writing, music you really liked, or anything else?

The Face(book) Of Health Care Reform Fraud

More interesting (sure, but is it Barbara Walters interesting?) Facebook news…

As I was flipping channels late last night (hooray insomnia!), I came across G4′s Attack of the Show and saw this report on the mailing of letters to state congressional representatives from within various Facebook games. If this report is true and the health care industry is behind this maneuver to ban any health care reform, then kudos go to those assholes. I find it interesting that the site they mention on the show, GetHealthReformRight.org has now been suspended. Anyway, I wonder if my mom or anyone else I know who plays games on Facebook has taken the survey and, if so, if they noticed this happening.

Also, Yahoo reported this yesterday: ‘Anti-social network’ aims to be Facebook killer app

A social networking site to commit FB suicide? Seriously? Why not just deactivate the account and skip the drama? Diff’rent strokes I guess…
