America’s Most Trusted Newsman

In the post-Walter Cronkite days, who is America’s most trusted newscaster? Jon Stewart, according to a Time magazine online poll.

Well, in a result that he will probably accept as downright apocalyptic for America, The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart has been selected, in an online poll conducted by Time Magazine, as America’s Most Trusted Newscaster, post-Cronkite. Matched up against Brian Williams, Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson, Stewart prevailed with 44 percent of the vote. Now, if we’re being honest, he probably managed to prevail as the winner precisely because he was the odd man out in a field of network news anchors. Nevertheless, I think Jim Cramer should feel free to SNACK ON THAT.

I was watching the Bio channel’s broadcast on Walter Cronkite last night and found it quite interesting. Rob and I discussed the seemingly meteoric rise of Cronkite and how he captured the attention of Americans during his career at CBS. How was he able to achieve such success? What was it about him that captivated news watchers? Was it his no-nonsense approach to the news? Was it his desire to simply report the news as straight as possible without any sort of editorializing? It makes me wonder if we’ll ever see another talent of his caliber again.

Perhaps Jon Stewart? I must admit that out of all the news anchors reporting out there, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are the ones I watch the most. Both bring a different take on the events of the day, but they are equally appealing to me. Like so many others, I applaud them both for bringing humor and irony to the news front. I think the one thing I really appreciate is their intellect and candor. When they discuss topics with their guests, it’s typically a no-holds-barred/call-it-like-I-see-it affair – like the one with Jim Cramer. I think the only thing that surprises me about the results of the online poll is that Stephen Colbert isn’t even mentioned. Better luck next time Stephen.
