Fight Club For Jesus
Or call it Fists for Jesus…
Religion never ceases to amaze me. Churches are really creating MMA-style leagues to convert more young men? Apparently so, click on the link above and read through the article. Some of my favorite quotes from the article:
“Blessed are the face beaters, for they shall inherit all the publicity.”
“People tend to forget that Jesus hung out with prostitutes, drunkards, and tax collectors.”
“But many young men truly feel that church has become effete, something for women.”
Perhaps one of the first invitees to a Fight Club for Jesus could be Larry David. It seems he’s pissed off enough people who might want to pummel him into “the light”. I wonder what the rules might be for Fight Club for Jesus. There are some intelligent, witty people who visit here, so let’s see what we can come up with.
#1 – The first rule of Fight Club for Jesus is, you must talk about and recruit for Fight Club for Jesus – go door to door if you must.

Welcome back, Frasier. Feel free to put your knowledge into posts more often – it’s always welcome. You might be surprised by how many spiritual people read these humble posts. In fact, I’d bet that you, Joe, Tracy, and Steve would have plenty to discuss in the ecclesiastical realm were you to ever meet in person.
Oh yes, and if I recall the gist of the stats I read awhile back in How We Believe, the ratio of women to men has been heavily slanted on the female end of the spectrum for quite some time. I’m not sure when this data was collected, but as far as Christianity goes, it’s a 61/39 split. From a quick scan of Google links, there are several other sites claiming it’s closer to a 3-1 ratio.
All that aside, I’m a little surprised that Josh is the only one to jump in with a FCFJ rule.
Actually, as interesting (and weird) as this sounds, it’s nothing new. In the 19th century in England, there was a movement called Muscular Christianity, which believed that (1) Christianity had become too effete, (2) that was why more women then men went to church, and (3) the way to win back men was to show them Christianity was about growing manly and “strong in the Lord.” Of course, that manliness is usually interpreted in a spiritual fashion, but the Muscular Christians (who worked together in several different churches: Methodist, Anglican, Baptist, etc.) thought that giving men more masculine things to do would draw them in. You didn’t have to sit around in the sewing circle, essentially.
Of course, it died out eventually. Around the 1890s or so. But there have been attempts to revive the philosophy behind it over the years. Boot Camp for Christ, or whatever this is, is addressing the same felt need.
More than you wanted to know, I’m sure, but it’s nice to put my masters in Church history to work now and then.

#2: You have the freedom to freely interpret or bastardize any scripture, passage, or holy writ if it means we get a little more dinero flowing through this here pipeline.
Pfffft. Protestants.
Yeah, the whole “turn the other cheek” thing would indicate that the way to win Fight Club for Jesus is to be the one getting the crap kicked out of you.
Good point. Seems we have a contradiction here – religion promoting Darwinism?
Wait, how will the meek inherit the earth if we’re beating the shit out of them in Jesus Fight Club?
