Out Of The Frying Pan

I said fire *all* thrusters!

I said fire *all* thrusters!

…and into a partial fire. Notice the lack of flame on the burner in my furnace on the far left (click the pic if you can’t see it)? It just so happens that that burner sits right below the sensor that controls the furnace. If I recall the repairman’s explanation correctly, when the sensor is tripped, the circuit board fires up the furnace. If that burner doesn’t fire and produce the level of heat expected, then the furnace resets itself and tries to fire again for a certain number of tries. If it fails each time, then the furnace stops trying to fire up. Net result: cold house.

This happened to me a year or so ago and the repairman opened up the gaps between the burners to help the flame fire across all the burners. All was well until recently when I noticed that my hands and feet were freezing – even in my office where the PC usually keeps the room nice and toasty. I noted at the time that the furnace was running, but upon closer inspection, cooler air was coming out so I checked the burners again. After flipping the reset switch, I watched a few cycles as the burners tried to fire up and you obviously know how that resulted. Since the repairman already attempted to open up the burners, the only recourse I have is to replace the burner. Great! Sense the tone here people. I suppose it could be worse – it could be much, much colder outside; I could be without a home altogether; I could have no extremities with which to freeze. See? Silver lining.

Yep, the burner’s been cleaned and the gaps between them widened.

You sure the burner can’t just be cleaned? There really isn’t much to them. They are just empty metal with holes that the gas escapes from and is ignited. I had to clean my all the time in KC, plus clean the thermocouple as well (got blown out a few times).

You could have had to replace the whole furnace…..Silver is great!
